Titus 1:5-9 Servant Leadership

Pastor Kevin Miller delivers a sermon from Titus 1:5-9.

Servant Leadership > Titus 1:5-9

1:5 Paul gives the mission for Titus in two parts: put what remains into order and appoint overseers.

1:6 Who would make a good overseer? Start by looking at how they serve their own family.

1:7-8 Next, look at their own character and how they are living by Christ’s commands.

1:9 Finally, choose men who love God’s Word and want to teach others how to follow it.

Emphasis: Overseers are to be living examples of the Christian life by following the pattern that Christ has taught.

Context: God’s authority was an underlying theme earlier in the chapter, now we will see His authority applied to the church. The contrast between faithful examples of Christ and those who are not will become clearer later in the chapter.

Theme: God’s church is to be shepherded by those who have been changed by Jesus and who live according to His authority.

Gospel: Overseers aren’t meant to be leaders who tell everyone else what to do, instead they are to be good servants who mirror what Jesus Himself taught: their example shows us how Christ Himself served us.

Applications: When it comes to the overseers themselves, what we are looking for is men who are committed to living as Jesus has taught in His Word, as well as men who want others to have that same joy of faithfulness.

With regard to the whole church, our goal is to follow the pattern of these faithful men so that we each would honor Christ in what we think, say, and do.

We are a member church of the Evangelical Free Church of America.
