Mark 15 Two Signs, Three Witnesses

Two Signs, Three Witnesses > Mark 15:33-47

15:33-39 Christ’s final hours and death on the cross – darkness, a cry, and a curtain all result in the declaration of the centurion: “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

15:40-41 Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and Salome were looking on from a distance – they courageously followed the Lord, even here at the end.

15:42-47 The King is buried by Joseph of Arimathea – another courageous follower of Jesus. The women watch this, too.

Emphasis: Christ the King is confirmed dead – by the centurion, by Christ’s followers, and by Pilate.

Context: We are in the dark space between the trial and crucifixion itself, and the glorious resurrection of Mark 16.

Theme: Christ dies like no other King: His work of atonement is completed; His work of resurrection still yet to come. Those who witnesses Christ’s death will also witness His resurrection.

Gospel: The Good News is that this Jesus who gave His life is actually the King – He is God’s Son and so He is the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Those who are searching for the Kingdom are to look to Him.

Applications: What do you believe? The evidence for Jesus’ identity is here. Those who were present confirm it. Are you looking for a Kingdom greater than what this world has to offer? Then look to Jesus. Are you a follower of Christ who is in shock and despair at the sins of this world and the sins of your own heart? Then look to Jesus. He is the Son of God. He is the King we need. He is the King who dies for His people.
