John 1,6,12 The Quiet Disciple

The Quiet Disciple > John 1:35-42; 6:1-15; 12:20-26

1:35-42 Andrew is among the first disciples to follow Jesus, and his priority is to immediately introduce Peter (his brother) to the Lord. This makes him, in essence, the first home missionary.

6:1-15 Christ gives a test for the disciples. Philip immediately sees difficulty and impossibility. Andrew isn’t sure what the Lord will do or how He will do it, but he steps out in faith anyways and gains a front row seat to seeing Christ provide for the people.

12:20-26 Some Greeks approach Philip with a request to meet Jesus, but apparently he isn’t sure what to do next – so he goes to Andrew for advice. Andrew, like he always does, takes Philip to the Lord and they are both treated to a profound teaching about the King and His mission.

Emphasis: A disciple follows the Lord and tells others about Him, which includes being willing to step out in faith as well as giving up their own life as they follow after Jesus.

Context: Each of these pictures of Andrew happens right before or after a call to follow and trust Jesus.

Theme: Following Jesus always means the same truths and practices, but the applications can look different (for example: the role of Peter or John versus Andrew, etc.).

Gospel: What matters most is not our own efforts or even personality type. Instead, what matters most is the One whom we follow and trust.

Applications: Realize that Peter and John aren’t the only faithful examples of following Christ, others – like Andrew – also give us pictures of true discipleship. How has the Lord made and called you? How are you following the Savior?
