The new community that Christ calls us to looks radically different from what we were before. Jesus calls His people – His church – to put off the old self and put on the new. Paul highlights six examples of what that looks like…
4:25 From speaking falsehoods to speaking truths.
4:26-27 From sinful anger to not giving an opportunity.
4:28 From taking from others to sharing with others.
4:29 From using our words poorly to using our words to build others up in grace.
4:30 From grieving the Spirit to walking in the Spirit.
4:31-32 From anger and hatred to kindness and grace, exampling what God has given to each of us in Jesus.
The Point: In Jesus, we are called to be what we already are – to put on the new self in place of the cast-off old self.
Prayer: Lord, apart from your grace, this would be another list of what to do and not to do that we would have no hope of keeping. Thank you that Jesus has already done the work! Now, help us by your Spirit to walk in it, that we would exhibit Christ to one another and to the world around us.
Application: More than simple “do” and “don’t,” what Paul calls us to is a life marked by who Christ has saved us to be. Embrace Christ’s call to be a part of His people. Embrace the life of one who is a part of Christ’s church!
