145:1-3 God’s greatness. God’s greatness is the cause of David’s praise. He responds to who the Lord is, and to what the Lord has done and promised, with worship.
145:4-8 God’s fame. The greatness of the Lord leads not only to David’s worship, but is also an invitation to all of God’s people. As we praise the Lord for His works and ways, as we tell of our good and faithful God to each new generation, the result is an ever-swelling mass of worshippers declaring and singing of His goodness to His people.
145:8-9 God’s mercy. Quoting from Exodus 34:6 ( repeated throughout the Old Testament), David reminds himself and us of who our Lord is and what He’s like. This is most clearly seen in the person and work of Jesus Christ, whose goodness and mercy are given to us at the cross and into eternity.
The Point: God is worthy of all worship due to His absolute and incomparable goodness given to us in Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Father, tune our hearts to sing your praise! You are good and great and gracious and merciful in every way, and your plans are perfect. Make us to enjoy you and your ways!
Application: Do you hope in and worship a God who is this good and gracious? A loving King whose promises are far better than even the best we can imagine? Or have you settled for less? Who will you tell of what the Lord has done for you and for His church? Who else will you pray for that they would come to praise Jesus, too?
