Godโ€™s Glory > John 17:1-5

17:1 Glory. The chapter begins with Christโ€™s prayer for himself in the sense that his glory โ€“ seen through how he has revealed the Father up to this point and, soon, through the cross and resurrection โ€“ will reflect the Fatherโ€™s glory.

17:2-3 Eternal life. Amazingly, lovingly, the Fatherโ€™s glory is seen through how Jesus has come to seek and save the lost. Christโ€™s authority was given to him precisely so that all who trust in him would be rescued for eternity. To know Christ is to know God; in Christ, we can draw near to God.

17:4-5 Glorify. Returning to where the chapter began, Christ speaks of his mission being accomplished: as he goes to the cross and through the tomb, he will return to the Fatherโ€™s side and enjoy the glory that he and the Father have shared in eternity โ€“ the glory due to God alone.

Background: John 17 comes at the very end of what has been called the โ€œfarewell discourse.โ€ These are Christโ€™s final teachings to the disciples before his arrest and death.

The Point: Jesus has accomplished the Fatherโ€™s plan and deserves the glory due to God himself.

Head: Know that Jesus is fully God and fully man โ€“ he has done all that is necessary to save his people.

Heart: Believe that glorifying God in Christ is the way for you to have eternal life. Respond to Jesus with your very life!

Hands: Glorify God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
