Not Me, But He! > John 1:29-34

1:29-31 The one we’ve waited for. John has gone to great lengths to ensure nobody thinks that he is the messiah. Instead, John’s role is to point toward, to prepare the way for, the arrival of the messiah. Here, now, we find John proclaiming that Jesus is the one: he is the Lamb of God, he has come to take away the sin of the world.

1:32-34 The one God said was coming. But how could John know that Jesus was the messiah? John points back to what the Lord himself had revealed to him: at Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit rested upon Jesus like a dove. That was the sign John had been looking for – that was the confirmation that this was the Son of God who had taken on flesh.

Background: How would John’s gospel move from telling us about Jesus in heaven to Christ’s life on earth? These verses show the glorious reality!

The Point: Jesus is the Lamb of God, the fulfillment of prophecy, the one who has come to deal with our sin.

Head: Believe John’s witness – Jesus is the fulfillment of all that the Old Testament promises pointed forward to.

Heart: Respond to Christ. His work means rescue from your sins. Have you received Jesus? Do you love him?

Hands: Who will you help to know Christ this Christmas? How will you point somebody (A friend? Family member? Coworker?) to hope in the Son of God?

Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
