10:21-23 Foreshadowing. The darkness here, while seemingly less dramatic than some of the other plagues, is actually more terrifying for Egypt: it reflects judgment on their chief “god,” and is a theme taken up throughout the scriptures to show the difference between those who rightly receive God’s judgment for their sin, and the life-giving light given in Jesus to all who place their trust in Him.
10:24-29 Darkness. Pharaoh, however, continues on his wicked course: just as he had done before, he only gives in half-way to Moses, allowing the people to go and worship but still withholding what was needed for that very worship. Things had reached such a turning point that Pharaoh went so far as to threaten Moses’ life! What comes after this breaks the pattern we’ve seen, leading toward an ultimate plague upon Egypt and to the rescue of God’s people.
The Point: Apart from the Lord, we all live in darkness. Yet, in Christ’s grace and mercy, we have light and life.
Prayer: Father, let us not take Jesus for granted. Let us not deceive ourselves and think that darkness is all there is. Instead, give us hope – for the first time or for each day – in Jesus. Make us into thankful people who live by Him and walk in His light as worshippers and truth-tellers in a dark world.
Application: Do you walk in Christ’s light? Which of your friends or family still walk in darkness? How will you pray for them and speak to them of the hope that you have in Christ?
