To understand why Paul is writing, the Colossians need to see who their Savior is. Jesus is (1) the image of God; (2) the one by whom all things were created; (3) the Head of the church; and (4) the firstborn from the dead.

Paul prays that the Colossians would be filled with a knowledge of God’s will and that they would walk worthily of the Lord. How? That the Colossians would bear good fruit, increasing in the knowledge of God, that they would be strengthened, and would give thanks. All of this only happens by Jesus Christ and His work in them.

Jesus prays that His disciples would be helped for the task right in front of them. That they would have joy even in the midst of the world’s hatred and the Lord’s protection.

Disciples of Jesus must see His crucifixion as something for their own good – it is Christ’s sacrifice that makes us right with the Father. Similarly, all who follow Jesus must recognize the opposition they receive as part of being identified with Him – and trust that Jesus will give lasting peace.
