The warning: don’t abandon so great a faith! As we have seen elsewhere in Hebrews, warnings are part of how the author wants his readers (and us!) to respond in faith. Here we see how deadly turning from Christ is: to know about Jesus and then to reject him is to reject the only one who can save your soul. Don’t turn from Christ!

The meaning. Ultimately, under the old covenant, the people were not able to regularly have direct access to the Lord. What’s more, their sacrifices – while important – were only temporary; they didn’t bring about the restoration from sin that the people ultimately needed.

Better priest = better covenant. Christ’s priesthood benefits us because he has actually done the work to redeem us. His work ushers in a new covenant, a better one: a promise that rescues us from our sins.

Why Melchizedek matters. Far from being a random history lesson, the author of Hebrews makes a big deal out of Melchizedek because this king-priest points to a priesthood greater than anyone who would ever come from Abraham – a priesthood better than anything even Aaron or Levi could ever offer – and Jesus’ priesthood is what is highlighted.
