    Foreshadowing. The darkness here, while seemingly less dramatic than some of the other plagues, is actually more terrifying for Egypt: it reflects judgment on their chief “god,” and is a theme taken up throughout the scriptures to show the difference between those who rightly receive God’s judgment for their sin, and the life-giving light given in Jesus to all who place their trust in Him.
