They say, John says. What we call “Palm Sunday” began here, in these verses, when Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem as God’s King – but not quite in the way that the scriptures described him. The people hoped for a political and military leader who would throw off the shackles of Rome. Yet, John notes that the disciples eventually came to see him according to what the Bible prophesied: as the humble, peaceful King who would protect and rescue his people.

John 17 comes at the very end of what has been called the “farewell discourse.” These are Christ’s final teachings to the disciples before his arrest and death. This central part of the prayer shifts from focusing on Christ’s own work to what will be accomplished through the disciples.
