12:1-2 Called to run. We, too, are called to join in the example of the faithful who have gone before us (Hebrews 11), following the pattern of endurance they have shown us as they pursued Christ.

12:3-11 Why we run. We run after Jesus because (a) he has already blazed the path, because (b) discipline is what faithfulness consists of, and because (c) there are eternal benefits to pursuing Jesus.

12:12-17 Let’s get running! How do we run well? (a) By pursuing peace and holiness, (b) by putting bitterness to death, and (c) by prizing what is eternal rather than what only lasts for the moment.

Background: This chapter takes the example of Hebrews 11 and calls us to put it into practice: we see not only that the life of faith is possible, but that we are called to actually live it and to get into the race ourselves.

The Point: Pursue Christ – set aside anything that would hinder you from reaching that goal. Look to live by faith, enduring patiently and faithfully as you await his return.

Head: How will you learn to treasure discipline rather than despising it? What needs to change in your thinking?

Heart: Believe that the Lord’s care for you even extends to his discipline, that he is working to produce holiness in you.

Hands: How will you “run well” this week? What is your plan?

Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
