King and Kingdom > Isaiah 9:1-7

9:1-3 Joy for Godโ€™s people. In contrast to the judgment that chapter 8 concluded with, the picture given here speaks of the future for Godโ€™s people: all who trust in him shall have a joy that never ends.

9:4-5 Peace for Godโ€™s people. Not only joy, but the reason for it: Godโ€™s people will have peace. Peace not only from war and violence, but peace also with our God. No longer will there be rebellion against his rule. Sin would not be a battle forever. And how would this be brought about?

9:6-7 Hope for Godโ€™s people. Joy and peace come on account of Jesus. Itโ€™s hope in Godโ€™s promises, belief in the coming (and now, arrived and someday returning) Messiah which will usher in this kind of joy, his kingdom characterized by this kind of peace. Godโ€™s people have every reason for hope because we are loved by him, and Jesus is the proof of that.

Background: These were fearsome times for Godโ€™s people, but the result of faith would be lasting hope.

The Point: Our hope is rooted in Jesus โ€“ what he has done and what he will return to complete.

Head: How can looking toward Jesus give you joy?

Heart: Ask the Lord to let Christโ€™s peace rule in your heart.

Hands: How will you speak and live in light of Christโ€™s love this Christmas? How can you show the hope of our Savior to somebody else?

Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
