Pastor Kevin Miller continues the Gospel of John series.
The Bible in Miniature > John 3:16-36
3:16-21 Christ’s conversation with Nicodemus tells us several crucial truths about what it means to believe in Christ: through God’s design in sending the Savior and through the response that all people are called towards, we learn that there is Good News for those who believe.
3:22-30 What does it look like to live according to this Good News? John the Baptist provides both a testimony and an example – he could be jealous of Christ’s work, but instead he responds as a humble friend, excited by what the Lord is doing. His joy is greater than himself.
3:31-36 The Gospel makes clear that there are only two ways to live: respond to Christ with belief, and you shall have eternal life. Respond with disobedience, and God’s wrath will remain upon you.
Context: This is the second part of Christ’s conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews.
Aim: John wants every reader of these words to see clearly that the offer of the Gospel is for everyone. Receiving it means to believe and live accordingly. Rejecting it means to remain in the wrath that we all deserve.
Gospel: This passage is one of the most well-known summaries of the Gospel: God sent His Son to die in our place, for our sins. All who respond with belief shall have eternal life.
Applications: Will you receive this this testimony about Jesus? How are your actions showing your beliefs?
Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
