God’s Glory > John 17:1-5

17:1 Glory. The chapter begins with Christ’s prayer for himself in the sense that his glory – seen through how he has revealed the Father up to this point and, soon, through the cross and resurrection – will reflect the Father’s glory.

17:2-3 Eternal life. Amazingly, lovingly, the Father’s glory is seen through how Jesus has come to seek and save the lost. Christ’s authority was given to him precisely so that all who trust in him would be rescued for eternity. To know Christ is to know God; in Christ, we can draw near to God.

17:4-5 Glorify. Returning to where the chapter began, Christ speaks of his mission being accomplished: as he goes to the cross and through the tomb, he will return to the Father’s side and enjoy the glory that he and the Father have shared in eternity – the glory due to God alone.

Background: John 17 comes at the very end of what has been called the “farewell discourse.” These are Christ’s final teachings to the disciples before his arrest and death.

The Point: Jesus has accomplished the Father’s plan and deserves the glory due to God himself.

Head: Know that Jesus is fully God and fully man – he has done all that is necessary to save his people.

Heart: Believe that glorifying God in Christ is the way for you to have eternal life. Respond to Jesus with your very life!

Hands: Glorify God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
