2:13-17 Christ’s mission. Jesus is challenged three times with regard to religious practices. In each case, he shows how he has the authority to define what is true. In this first picture, we find that Christ’s mission – and his call – is to redeem sinners, not those who think they’ve got it all together.
2:18-22 Christ’s presence. The second challenge comes with regard to fasting. Christ’s point is that who he is and what he is teaching about the kingdom is not just a modification of what the scribes and Pharisees taught. No, in Christ the new has come! He has the authority of the line of King David!
2:23-28 Christ’s lordship. The final question relates to the sabbath: who does Jesus think he is to let his disciples do “work” on the holy day? Christ answers that he – even more than David – defines what the sabbath is for and how to properly keep it. Jesus is Lord even over the sabbath.
The Point: Jesus is the authority – not tradition, the law, or anyone else. He is the promised one from David’s line!
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you call sinners to eat and feast with you. Thank you for not being ashamed of us! And most of all, thank you for being our Savior-King, even greater than King David. You are the Lord who makes all things new!
Application: Be amazed at the God who is not ashamed to have fellowship with sinful people. How will you respond to a Savior who is this gracious? How can you example this kind of grace to others in the week ahead?
Here is how I will apply these truths: ___________________
