    Foreshadowing. The darkness here, while seemingly less dramatic than some of the other plagues, is actually more terrifying for Egypt: it reflects judgment on their chief “god,” and is a theme taken up throughout the scriptures to show the difference between those who rightly receive God’s judgment for their sin, and the life-giving light given in Jesus to all who place their trust in Him.

    None like Him. The Lord pulls back the curtain, revealing His own mercy in being patient with Pharaoh and Egypt, even warning them of the coming plague of hail. Yet, Pharaoh’s heart is also revealed: heavy and rebellious toward the Lord, unwilling to even protect his own people and livestock.

    : Lord, keep us from the hard-hearted rebellion of Pharaoh. If not for your grace, we would fall into the same trap. Instead: make us to trust and obey you, to respond to Jesus as our Savior-King, and therefore to wait patiently for your forever blessing that you’ve promised to your people.
