The meaning. Ultimately, under the old covenant, the people were not able to regularly have direct access to the Lord. What’s more, their sacrifices – while important – were only temporary; they didn’t bring about the restoration from sin that the people ultimately needed.

Better priest = better covenant. Christ’s priesthood benefits us because he has actually done the work to redeem us. His work ushers in a new covenant, a better one: a promise that rescues us from our sins.

Why Jesus is better. Christ’s priesthood is better because it is secured by an oath from God, because Jesus has conquered death, and because our Lord is both fully man and fully God – like us, yet not like us, in every way that matters.

Why Melchizedek matters. Far from being a random history lesson, the author of Hebrews makes a big deal out of Melchizedek because this king-priest points to a priesthood greater than anyone who would ever come from Abraham – a priesthood better than anything even Aaron or Levi could ever offer – and Jesus’ priesthood is what is highlighted.

What high priests do. A high priest represents people to God. Essential to being a high priest is that a person must be chosen by God and they must be able to sympathize with the people they serve. Jesus was chosen by the Lord and knows what it is to be tempted. Yet, because He never sinned, Jesus’ priesthood is even greater than any other high priest.

A rest to be entered. The author of Hebrews continues with his application of Psalm 95 to our lives: there is a rest for the people of God if we respond to our Lord in faith. Note the warning: simply knowing about God or His ways is not enough, we must actively trust and believe Him.

A truth for the future. In a series of questions and answers, what becomes clear is that the primary problem of God’s people in the past was unbelief. Heading into the future, we are to not repeat the same mistake, but instead must have – and prioritize growing in – faith.

Jesus is greater than Moses. Christ’s faithfulness and Moses’ faithfulness have a number of parallels, yet Jesus is ultimately greater than Moses. How so? It’s because Jesus is the builder of God’s people, He is the One with the plan because He is not only man, but also Creator God.
