God’s love. Our unity flows forth from the secure foundation of God’s love: because we have first been loved so perfectly and wonderfully by him, we can now love one another and love those whom the Lord sends us out to.

John 17 comes at the very end of what has been called the “farewell discourse.” These are Christ’s final teachings to the disciples before his arrest and death. This central part of the prayer shifts from focusing on Christ’s own work to what will be accomplished through the disciples.

Jesus prays that His disciples would be helped for the task right in front of them. That they would have joy even in the midst of the world’s hatred and the Lord’s protection.

Disciples of Jesus must see His crucifixion as something for their own good – it is Christ’s sacrifice that makes us right with the Father. Similarly, all who follow Jesus must recognize the opposition they receive as part of being identified with Him – and trust that Jesus will give lasting peace.

Those who love Jesus will do what He has taught and commanded. In our own sinful power, this is impossible. But praise God that He has provided the Spirit to help us in the “doing.”
