    Hebrews 11:17-31 – Future Promises 11/19/2023

Faith is rooted in trust, not doubt. As Abraham shows us, the people of God are often called to trust him farther than they could understand.

Faith that believes in God. Faith is how we respond to God’s promises. It is how we trust in what God has said even before we fully receive all that he has told us.

The warning: don’t abandon so great a faith! As we have seen elsewhere in Hebrews, warnings are part of how the author wants his readers (and us!) to respond in faith. Here we see how deadly turning from Christ is: to know about Jesus and then to reject him is to reject the only one who can save your soul. Don’t turn from Christ!

Christ’s covenant is forever enough. Unlike the Old Testament sacrifices – and unlike the practices of any other faith – Christ’s one sacrifice is enough for everyone who trusts in him, forever.

Better priest = better covenant. Christ’s priesthood benefits us because he has actually done the work to redeem us. His work ushers in a new covenant, a better one: a promise that rescues us from our sins.

Why Jesus is better. Christ’s priesthood is better because it is secured by an oath from God, because Jesus has conquered death, and because our Lord is both fully man and fully God – like us, yet not like us, in every way that matters.

Why Melchizedek matters. Far from being a random history lesson, the author of Hebrews makes a big deal out of Melchizedek because this king-priest points to a priesthood greater than anyone who would ever come from Abraham – a priesthood better than anything even Aaron or Levi could ever offer – and Jesus’ priesthood is what is highlighted.
